This lovely fancy dressing room tray was a piece that fits nicely a top of Bev’s Chocolate Cabinet that I completed last week. She wasn’t sure if she should even drop it off. I insisted she should and I was confident I could make it special.
I first filled in all the cracks with some silicone caulking to ensure there was no inconsistencies with the top surface. I then painted the bottom side of the tray and the rim of the top. For the centre of the tray I really wanted to use a great paper I had found that I used to line her dressing table drawers (also another piece I finished last week for Bev). I cut it to fit ensuring it was all the edges were symmetrical to the centre edges.
With a decoupaging glue (Mod Podge) I applied glue to the bottom of the tray and to the back of the paper. I applied more glue to the top of the paper once I had centred it on the top. I used a flat sided credit like card to remove all the air bubbles from beneath the paper.
Once it all dried, it left me with a lackluster feeling (wha wha) – so on to plan b. I pulled out my Royal Stencils Fabric Damask Stencil I purchased a while back and a crackling medium by Martha Stewart I purchased some time back to add texture to the surface. I spatulated the crackling onto the top surface and once dried applied a couple of coats of the same paint I used for the dressing table and chocolate cabinet.
Now I was happy! I used the same hardware I used to update the dressing table, sprayed the pieces with Rustoleum antique bronze, bore a few holes and attacked them so the tray. The tray now has become much more functional and pretty! Lastly, I applied some felt stops to the bottom so the tray will sit nicely on any surface without scratching the surface or the bottom of the tray.
Now it can be used to store items on or use as a tray for breakfast in bed!!
