I’ve been meaning to finish this piece for almost a year…. It’s been buried in my studio for that long. I knew when I finished it I would use it in my office as storage for all my “stuff”. I couldn’t have imagined it would turn out so great. I’m so pleased with how rustic, French Country and Old World it looks. She was found on the outskirts of Waterdown, ON on a rural street called “Parkside”.
I’m pretty sure this piece originated in Indonesia and it is some kind of gumwood. When we picked it up it had already been painted in a cream colour which I thought was perfect for the base colour for my layers of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint. You can actually see it in the picture below … here it is on its front. We had a stellar week for weather this past week… sun out and shining and the temperature around 15°Celsius (that’s about 66°F). Can’t beat this weather in March in Southern Ontario.
I first applied a coat of ASCP in Paris Grey over the entire piece. I couldn’t get into the armoire as I misplaced my skeleton key that opened the cabinet doors. I looked everywhere for that darned key last week but had to call a locksmith to open it for me ($80 later). Now that it’s open I will no doubt find that key!!
I then began layering all my colours. I dry brushed ASCP French Linen and Duck Egg Blue.
The other rather rustic appeal for me was the texturized areas already on the surface of the cabinet. Someone had already added some kind of crackling medium to areas to give it a more shabby appearance.
I then began wet distressing the edges to further give it an aged patina. You can see below the white and wood peaking through the chalk paint I just finished.
I also gave the inside a couple of coats of ASCP Old white to freshen it up (photo at the bottom). My next step was to wax the whole piece with clear wax and then dark wax to give it an even more aged look and patina. The final layer was too high lite the details with gold gilding.
I am overjoyed at how great it turned out. What do you all think?
Don’t forget to PIN it for later!!
