This is the first of a number of tables for returning client and friend Martha and her husband Mike. Two of the nicest people you would ever meet. This small ornate painted table was brought to me in pristine condition. Martha explained that it belonged to her parents and that her father had painstakingly refinished it many years ago. But as many of us feel today, it needed a little boost to make it even more special.
She wanted the whole piece to be a white colour. I suggested Old White by Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, three coats to be exact. Some distressing and what I’m calling a light “brush over” with very little paint on the brush over the deeper carvings of the piece. I learned this from a question and answer blog on one of my favourite sites Christen Bensten from Blue Egg Brown Nest explains to achieve this look she does not paint in the crevices and allows the wood to show through. This to me looks almost glazed and I just love it!!
To finish the piece I waxed with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint Soft Clear Wax and after leaving it to dry for a few days I did a coat of Artisan Enhancement NO VOC Oil based topcoat. It goes on milky, is self-leveling and is a satin finish. Amazing!!
I hope you love it, Martha…. I can’t stand it… I just adore those spindle legs!!
