This is a well made Canadian painted open hutch made by the Kroehler furniture company. It was purchased in Virgil on “Henry” Street from a couple that was selling off pieces of furniture for an elderly aunt that had sold her home. My husband and I picked this piece up on a dark cold evening last month with the wind blowing very briskly outside the two car garage.
I decided to refinish the top surface of the bottom cabinet and the top of the shelf as well. I cleaned off both surfaces very well with TSP (trisodium phosphate) and a fine grit sandpaper to rough up the surface. After it dried I applied two coats of General Finishes Antique Walnut Gel Stain. It really does go on beautifully. I then decided to use a rub on polyurethane by Minwax to protect the surface as I’m guessing when the painted open hutch reaches it’s forever home it will get used well.
The majority of the painted open hutch received my new favourite Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Old Ochre. It required two coats and the back of the interior part of the cabinet received a mixture of ASCP Coco and Old White to give it a bit of depth. The paint than received a light distressing and ASCP Soft White Clear Wax buffed to a wonderful sheen. For additional depth, a dark wax was added as well.
This lovely painted open hutch measures 32”W x 12 ½”-18”D x 30”-74”H and is the perfect size for almost any room. A lovely hutch for the kitchen for additional counter space and storage to the front hall for again additional storage or even in a dining room with little wall space would allow for a great storage and stylish hutch to display your lovelies.
