I’ve been busy this week working on a dining set for my client “Stacey”. I’ve managed to finally complete the painted lamp black dining chairs today. Stacey has such a wonderful space to work with. She had her grand dining room painted in this lovely dark navy blue colour and wainscoting and two built-in cabinets painted in a bright white colour. The room has very large windows so during the day it is very light filled and romantic in the evening.
Stacey decided on the dramatic Lamp Black colour by General Finishes to complete her beautiful Duncan Phyfe Dining room set. The six chairs were first prepared by cleaning them with the recommended 1/2 water and 1/2 denatured alcohol with an extra fine sanding sponge to all of the surfaces.
After cleaning all the surfaces, I began by applying two coats the General Finishes Lamp Black Milk Paint. This paint is very luxurious and goes on very smoothly and is self leveling. I did apply a third coat in spots were it did not cover completely. After the paint had dried I began the distressing. I used a 100 grit sand paper to remove paint from the edges of the chairs to achieve this high – lighted area of golden/red from the original mahogany finish.
After the distressing I applied a coat of my new favourite topcoat Artisan Enhancements Topcoat an oil NO VOC soy based product. This product goes on milky but dried completely clear and give you a matte finish.
Stacey purchased the fabric in Hamilton on Ottawa Street, the fabric mecca of Southern Ontario. She choose this great twig pattern in a champagne/pewter colour that matches her ceiling and of course the black colour on the rest of the dining set. Absolutely perfect!!
She decided to place the dark twig patter along the edges of the seat rather than the centre…. I agreed this looked much better!!
