It sure has been a long time since I posted last on this blog. This lovely french provincial coffee table has been finished to be an exact matching table for a lovely client of mine “Martha”. I completed another exact table for her some four or five years ago. She has since moved to a bigger home in which case she is in need of a matching table.
She picked up this french provincial coffee table and was excited to have it completed during these crazy (Covid-19) times. Her husband dropped it off a couple of weeks ago and because it’s been so cool in southern Ontario I wasn’t able to strip and sand until last week.
I started by chemically stripping the top. I then sanded the piece with an 80 grit sandpaper and then to the 120 grit sandpaper to ensure it was smooth. Now, it is a vintage table and it did come with a few deeper scratches and some imperfections on the veneer surface so even though they are not really noticeable in the photos if you look closer they are still there. But all in all the General Finishes Java Gel Stain covers really well to make it appear flawless.
I applied two coats of the Gel Stain to the french provincial coffee table and then used Minwax Wipe-On Polyurethane in Satin. I applied about four coats of the poly to give it a durable finish and the perfect sheen to the top of the table.
The apron and legs of the table were painted in Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Old White. Always a favourite of mine, Annie Sloan Chalk paint gives any piece the perfect rustic elegant look and finish. It was also slightly distressed and clear waxed for additional protection and durability.
I hope you all enjoy it as much as I do.
