Have you ever had something that you’ve had to redo over and over again? Well, this bow front pink dresser, was one of those pieces where if you can’t “beat’em” then “join ’em”!! You will soon find out exactly what I mean by this. Another roadside rescue, a piece that had lovely bones but I knew getting there was going to be a challenge.
I started by peeling off all this black lacquer paint from all the surfaces. Some areas were harder than others but I ended up having to sand everything smooth before I started.
What I thought originally was a walnut veneer was actually mahogany AND we all know that mahogany “bleeds” bigtime!! And that was an understatement. I had visions of Tiffany Blue with silver and glass highlights but when the blue turned to “pink” in areas I thought, I knew exactly what to do !! Spray on some shellac and away we go, but that was not the case. I did this shellac/paint routine about five times but to no avail.
I had never seen this kind of bleeding before. So, this is when beatin’ them was not going to work but “join ’em” certainly was. PINK was now on the horizon for this piece. If it was going to bleed pink – that was the colour I would use. Mixing a custom Annie Sloan Chalk Paint Scandinavian Pink and Old White (1:10). And no more pink bleedthrough… at least not noticeable.
It was waxed with ASCP Clear Soft Wax, a bit of silver gilding, a bit of paper lining and new glass and silver hardware added for that extra bling effect. Just Lovely!!
