The gentle bow-front Antique Danish Pine Chest of drawers is simply full of grace. I purchased this from a lovely lady from Denmark named “Anja”. In 1955 she and her family immigrated to Canada from Varde, Denmark. It was given to her as an antique dating it back to approximately 1850-1870. A pine chest of drawers such as this was a typical coming of age gift to a young woman in the 1800’s in Denmark. It was explained to me by Anja that it was used as a trunk of sorts to move from the family home and travel by train to the city where a young lady would learn a trade or work in another home. A shipping label was typically affixed to the back of the chest to identify who owned the piece. On the back of this chest is a label with the first name of Edith and the city of Copenhagen spelled in Danish. This piece certainly is a special find, especially with the label remaining in tact all those many years.
After researching this antique Danish pine chest of drawers so extensively I’ve decided to NOT paint it or part with it. It unfortunately does not have its original pulls and escutcheon covers and has a pronounced crack in the front rim of the top piece. But all in all it is just perfect the way it is. I have found similar pieces online, painted and not, for upwards of $2500. It really is a gem. It’s new home will be somewhere in my front hall, living room and/or dining room. I like to move things around all the time so just depending on how I feel that week.
