This solid walnut hutch was found in St. Catharines from a young couple that decided that they preferred Ikea to Vintage/Antique. Lucky for us!! Otherwise this lovely cabinet wouldn’t be as great as it is now.
The cabinet was is really good shape to begin with so I simply reconditioned the inside surface of the shelves and left the fretwork as is as well. The rest of the hutch was painted in a custom blend of colours from Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in a combination of Graphite and Coco. After a couple of layers of paint I waxed the whole piece with Miss Mustard Seed dark wax. This was the first time I used this product and I really liked the way it went on. I used a waxing brush to get the coverage and allowed it to dry for about 10 minutes before I very lightly used some steel wool to take off some of the dark wax leaving it in the groves of the ornate bits of the piece. The steel wool also served another purpose as I distressed the piece (very lightly) on all the edges to reveal the finish beneath the paint. When the light catches these areas it almost has a golden hue. I then reapplied a second coat of Annie Sloan Clear Wax and buffed the whole unit to a beautiful shine.
The hutch measures: 34″W x 15 1/2″D x 66″H.
Now to why I named it as I did. After painting and stepping back to look at it, I felt it looked very masculine and I automatically thought of the 1970’s macho television cop drama of “Starsky and Hutch”, hence my reason for naming it as such.
This hutch is very versatile. Could be used in the dining room (it actually has plate rails for china), living room, bedroom, hallway and certainly if you have a large enough bathroom for storage of towels, etc..
Here is the before and after of this lovely hutch:
