I think I just made it in under the proverbial buzzer on this one. It’s Fab Furniture Flipping Contest time again and I’ve got a wonderful Saltwash finished dresser, that I’m fittingly calling Salty. The theme this month is “Coastal Inspirations”, and our sponsor Saltwash™ has so generously sent all participating bloggers a large sample of the product to create our #coastalinspirations with.
Saltwash™ is made with real sea salt and when incorporated into any paint product as the base coat for the project. This gives the appearance of an aged, sun worn and sea salt “eaten” piece of furniture. So very “coastal”.

This product was all new to me. So, before my Saltwash arrived I did a lot of scouting around online to see what this additive was all about. From my research I’ve put together a reference for you to look at to see how I did each step of the process. I have to also say it was super easy to do!!
I started with this small three drawer oak dresser that had been painted at one time and then stripped and refinished. I found it at one of our local thrift shops and just loved the simplicity of it, especially the large wooden knobs/handles. I first prepped the piece by cleaning it all down with a denatured alcohol/ water mixture and a sanding sponge. This achieved two things, the first to clean off any residual dirt or grease and secondly it scuffed up the surface for better adhesion of the first paint treatment.
Next, it was time to mix the Saltwash™ and paint. The paint that I chose for this layer was General Finishes Emerald Green Milk Paint. I had ordered a sample size of this some time back and thought this was a great starting colour. I used about half of the paint in the pint. I just poured it into a plastic container for mixing. I then added a scoop of Saltwash to the paint. I mixed it and realized I needed another and then another. So all in, I needed three scoops of additive to a half a pint of paint (about 240mL-for us Canadians/Europeans that use the metric system).
Once I achieved this cake batter-like consistency I was ready to apply it to my piece. I used a cheap chip brush to literally dab the Saltwash mixture onto the surface of the dresser, creating these high peaks and valleys.
After it began to dry I dragged my brush over the peaks very lightly to knock them down and create a much smoother surface.
After leaving to dry for about an hour I applied my next coat of paint. This time using a grey/blue Annie Sloan Chalk Paint mixture of different paints I had sitting around. Again, using a chip brush and painting that coat on lightly in some spots to allow the green to show through. This is where you really begin to see the magic of this wonderful product!!
After that coat dried, I applied a white wash over the entire piece to again give it another layer of dimension. This stuff is brilliant!!
