This refinished, an almost shabby chic dresser is solid, heavy and well built. I acquired it from a couple in the Aberdeen area in Hamilton. It belonged to the gentleman’s grandmother whose last name “Keaton” was also the gentleman’s middle name.
I say it is almost shabby chic because I refinished and restained the top surface of the cabinet rather than paint the entire surface. Using a rubber block, I used a 120 grit sandpaper and sanded the top surface by hand. I then dusted it off with a tack cloth and applied Minwax Wood Conditioner that is recommended so the wood does not become blotchy after the stain has been added.
After the conditioner was applied I began staining the top surface with a clean cloth. I used Minwax Special Walnut Stain and I felt the colour was deep enough for what I wanted to achieve with only one coat of stain. Perfect!
As I allowed the surface of the stained top to dry I began painting the rest of the dresser with the Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in the Old White colour. You will notice that I also taped the top off to protect the top from the paint. My favourite type of tape to use is by far Frog Tape. I use it all the time! There is a chemical in the tape that repels the paint molecules giving you the perfect edge, absolutely no bleed through!
I applied two coats of the chalk paint by hand giving the surface a light sanding between coats. After they were dry I began the magic (distressing process) that gives the piece its shabby chic look.
After the ‘magic’ I wiped the cabinet down with a barely damp cloth to remove the remaining dust and then began to apply the Annie Sloan Chalk Paint Clear Soft Wax to the entire painted surface. After the stain dried on the top surface, I applied a couple of coats of Minwax Wipe On Poly. So easy and versatile to use.
This shabby chic dresser measures 46″W x 22″ D x 36″H and the mirror is an additional 35″H. It provides two large drawers for extra storage in the bedroom or even a beautiful piece (without the mirror) for your dining room.
This is a fine example of refinished and painted furniture and what you can do to create your own style at home.
