I knew I had to have this painted vintage sideboard as soon as I saw it!! I picked it up in Port Dalhousie on “Belair” Avenue from a lovely couple that was renovating their home and needed to get rid of some items. I was the lucky one to have picked it up when I did. I just love the details on the ends of the cabinet and on the door fronts. Very stately.
The top surface is a veneered walnut and it had a significant spot of damage on the top. So, as always, I use a chemical stripper to get the rest of the coating and stain off of the top. Once all the chemicals have been cleaned off and “gassed off” I lightly sanded those surfaces by hand. This one is a little tricky because it has five separate veneered pieces making sure to not cross over to the next board and cross sanding the grain.
I then used General Finishes Java Gel Stain. I wanted it to be dark to play off the hardware that got a spray of Rustoleum Oil Rubbed Bronze. The paint colour is a lovely greige colour by Annie Sloan Chalk Paint called Coco. After a light distressing of all those lovely details, including those wonderful columns on each end, I waxed the painted surface with clear soft wax also by Annie Sloan Chalk Paint. The top surface received a polyurethane finish of General Finishes Gel Topcoat for added protection and of course durability.
What a great piece!! It could be used as a sideboard/buffet in the dining room or as a very stately tv console under a big screen tv.
