This handsome painted sideboard was found in Fenwick from a young Dutch man that found it in his new home when he moved a few weeks before that. It had been sitting in the basement looking quite sad and defeated until I came to the rescue. It’s a solid, sturdy and very heavy walnut sideboard with some lovely lines, applique and ornate wooden original pulls that add that feminine appeal to the piece.
It’s been in my workshop for a couple of months now not knowing exactly what to do with it. I decided to paint the piece in a custom combination colour of Graphite, Coco and a touch of Aubusson Blue from the Annie Sloan Chalk Paint collection. I first stripped the top and refinished the surface with General Finishes combination Java and Antique Walnut Gel Stain to give it a lovely deep and durable finish that will last for many years to come.
I then mixed my paint colours together and applied two good coats of paint by hand using the medium size Annie Sloan natural bristle brush that leaves those wonderful authentic brush marks on the surface. After the paint dried I wanted to deepen the colour with the Annie Sloan Soft Dark Wax. I was careful not to add too much dark wax as it can appear “muddy” quickly if care was not taken. I than used this method of applying the clear wax to blend the dark and clear to give it a “glazed” look.
Working in small areas, the dark wax was added with the large Annie Sloan Wax Brush to all the ornate areas of the drawers and bottom of the sideboard, using a circular motion to get all the dark wax into the crevices of the piece. After that I got a soft microfiber cloth and placed a dollop of clear wax in the middle of the cloth and wrapping it around the wax creating a pocket of wax on the inside. Rubbing it on your hand first to heat the wax up allowing it to come through the cloth for application on the surface was the next step. This allows you to control the amount of clear wax on the flat surfaces and allows you to take off as much dark wax as you feel you need to. It does take a bit of time to work it out and see what looks best. But boy (Dutchie Boy) does the final product look amazing!!
This sideboard measures: 62″ W x 20″D x 38 1/2″H.
