What a beauty this painted Victorian Eastlake Style Dresser is! I did a custom paint job last fall for a local woman named “Marilyn”. She and her husband had moved to the Niagara Region recently after retiring as a nurse in the Greater Toronto Area. I completed a very cool Mid Century Art Deco glass hutch in a bold yellow colour and it was going in the same spot that this piece was sitting in her living room.
I was so excited when Marilyn offered me the piece so we did a bit of an exchange of services for this great painted Victorian Eastlake Style Dresser. Yay! Just love the details on the drawers and how much great storage it really has. I’ve had it sitting on the backburner, for about a year and I really didn’t feel much inspiration at all, that is until last week.
You see we’ve had a really wet and dreary fall this year (as many parts of the northeast have had) and last week for the first time in weeks the weather was mild and sunny. So I stripped the top of the dresser, sanded it and used my go-to General Finishes Antique Walnut mixed with Java Gel Stain to give it a much deeper colour. Perfecto!
The only colour I felt would stand up to this brilliant finish of the top surface was the General Finishes Lamp Black Milk Paint. I applied three coats to ensure full coverage. Because of the porous nature of the milk paint, I had to seal the surface and I chose to apply a natural soy-based oil sealer by Artisan Enhancements. This product is brilliant, it goes on milky and dries crystal clear.
