This fantastic painted collector coffee table was completed for a lovely lady named “Marilyn”. I later found out that not too long after I completed this for her she fell ill and passed away. I heard this from her niece who just so happens to be a fellow local painter.
This table was brought to me in really shabby shape. Fortunately, her son in law sanded it down before she dropped it off, making it smoother and easier for me to finish. After a coat of paint, I could see all the little imperfections left behind from the stripping and sanding. I knew that it was going to bleed through so I applied a coat of shellac to seal in the wood (and first coat of paint) and proceeded to fill in all the cracks with wood filler. After sanding it smooth the next coat of paint went on much more nicely.
Marilyn chose this wonderful Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Country Grey to finish her painted collector coffee table. Absolutely beautiful. After a coat of wax, some new back banding to secure the glass to the frame of the top surface and new hinges finished it all off.
Marilyn planned on housing a collection of fountain pens that she had been collecting for years.
This post and table are in memory of Marilyn Rose, Professor and Former Dean, Brock University.
