I was so excited to be able to grout back splash last week that I had to show you how I did it!! Now if you have been around for the last couple of weeks you know I’ve been helping a friend get her townhouse condo ready to move into. She didn’t want to pay those high costs that builders charge for these things so she decided to do it herself (or hire someone to do it for her) at a much more reasonable cost.
She had the tiles installed by a professional and then let me at it for grouting. She chose this wonderful denim glass mosaic from Lowes at a really good price and the bright white colour for grout to get this ultra modern clean look.
What did I need you ask? Well, a float, a putty knife, a bucket of water and a sponge and the grout of course. I started by scooping up the grout with the putty knife onto the grout float.
I first started by placing the float at about a 45-degree angle to the surface of the tile and working the grout into the tiles on a diagonal.
The goal is to literally “push” the grout into the joints going over the same area multiple times at multiple angles.
After I was fairly confident there was enough grout in all the joints (and you’ll notice it does get kind of messy) I need a bucket of water and sponge to get the excess off.
And then the wiping began. Very carefully, making sure to not pull the grout out of the joints but cleaning enough off remove most of the grout from the surface of the tile.
It’s that simple!! I must say, though, it is a lot of hard work…. my shoulder was definitely needing some muscle rub.
I just love the way it turned out!! She is also installing some under counter lighting and valences. I’ll do an “after” shot when she gets all of her appliances installed.
Just quick note: See all that green tape along the counter top- make sure you remove it right after your contractor has finished installing the tiles otherwise AFTER you finish grouting the removal is near impossible. I think it took me just as long to remove that tape as it did to grout the whole area!!
Again, this grout back splash is something that can be done as a DIY project to try and curb some costs.
